Empowering digital transformation for UNESCO sites
through cross-border cooperation in the Programme area
Kapodistriaki Developmemt S.A. proudly takes part in the DACC project – “Empowering digital transformation for UNESCO sites through cross-border cooperation in the Programme area,” funded by Interreg Greece–Italy 2021/2027
The DACC project partners have identified a key challenge faced in the Greece–Italy area: despite its exceptional cultural wealth, the region still shows lower levels of digitalisation in tourism and culture compared to the European average. The partners recognise that the involved UNESCO sites need innovative tools to better manage visitor flows, enhance heritage value, support local communities, and reduce strong seasonality. Limited digital skills and insufficient technological infrastructure risk slowing down the sector’s competitiveness and long-term sustainability.
DACC responds to this challenge through an integrated approach based on training, the use of big data, and cross-border cooperation. The project promotes the digital transformation of tourism services in the UNESCO sites of Matera, Monte Sant’Angelo, Olympia and Corfu, fully aligned with the EU Digital Decade Strategy. Its activities combine research, capacity building, and the development of innovative digital tools.
The first phase of the project focuses on analysing the current state of digitalisation across the UNESCO sites, carried out through studies, interviews, focus groups and questionnaires with experts. This analysis will help identify the impact and potential of digital technologies across the four UNESCO sites.
Building on this shared knowledge base, the partners will design a joint training programme, delivered in each participating city and targeted at students, professionals, and cultural operators to strengthen practical digital skills for tourism services.
Finally, DACC will create a shared digital strategy framework for the management and promotion of the UNESCO sites, involving institutions, tourism bodies and cultural industries. The goal is to reduce the digital divide and develop a model that can be replicated elsewhere.
This phase will be supported by:
- international conferences to disseminate the project’s results;
- interactive exhibitions showcasing the digital solutions developed;
- networking events to exchange best practices and encourage new collaborations.
Through this comprehensive pathway, DACC will play a leading role in driving the digital transformation of UNESCO sites, reinforcing the link between culture and innovation and building a stronger bridge between Italy and Greece for more modern, sustainable and competitive heritage management.
Project partners:
- ASSET Basilicata, (Italy) – Lead Beneficiary
- Municipality of Monte Sant’Angelo (Italy)
- Chamber of Commerce of Ilia (Greece)
- Kapodistriaki Development S.A.(Greece)
Project duration: 24 months (04/06/2025 – 04/06/2027)
Project total budget: € 904.575,75
EU Contribution (ERDF, 75%): € 678.431,81
National Contribution (25%): € 226.143,94
